WELLMAN

Mid-Prairie pitchers Tatem Telfer and Brady Weber found just the right touch against Durant.

The Golden Hawks defeated Durant two times in three River Valley Conference baseball games played June 21 in Durant and June 24 in Wellman.

Telfer, an Arkansas State commit whose pitches are hitting 90 mph, came just one batter short of pitching his first seven inning no-hitter June 21, striking out 16 in a 3-0 victory. An Iowa high school pitch count rule stopped him.

Monday night, in the second game of a doubleheader at Paul Bailey Field, Weber pitched a 1-hitter in a game that went just five innings because the Golden Hawks (17-8) won in a mercy-rule decision, 10-0.

Mid-Prairie scored three runs in the second inning, five runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, ending the game on a run-scoring, walk-off double by Brock Harland.

Telfer hit a two-run single in the second inning and Dylan Henry hit a two-run triple in the fourth. Weber drove in a run with a single and scored on Henry’s triple, and then added a run-scoring hit in the fifth inning.

In the first game of Monday’s doubleheader, Durant rallied from two runs down to steal an 8-6 victory. The Wildcats (15-12) scored two runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 6, forcing extra innings.

Durant scored two more runs, both with two outs, in the ninth inning to win it.

Telfer had five hits in the two games, drove in four runs and scored twice.

Mid-Prairie junior pitcher Tatem Telfer struck out 16 and came within one batter of a no-hitter in the June 21 win at Durant.

Telfer gave up no hits and walked 6 in 6.2 innings for the Golden Hawks. He was taken out in the midst of the final inning due to Iowa’s rule on maximum pitches allowed in one game. He had reached 112 pitches.

Gentry Bontrager came in to record the final out.

Brady Weber and Blake Swart drove in the runs for Mid-Prairie. Dylan Henry had three hits. Joe Hall and Landry Gingerich scored the runs.

West Liberty 10

Tatem Telfer’s game-ending throw to home from right field in the seventh inning secured a 12-10 win and a double play walk-off at West Liberty on June 20.

The Comets had scored three runs and loaded the bases with one out. A fly ball was hit to right field. Telfer secured the second out with a catch and then threw out a runner tagging at third base and attempting to score.

The game was moved from Mid-Prairie to West Liberty due to wet grounds in Wellman.

Blake Swart had two hits and drove in three runs for the Golden Hawks, and Joe Hall also had two hits. Tatem Telfer and Landry Gingerich each drove in a pair of runs.

Brady Weber, Dylan Henry and Luke Traetow each scored twice.

West Liberty scored five runs in the opening inning, but the Golden Hawks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the third inning. A four-run rally in the fifth turned a one-run deficit into a three-run lead.

Freshman pitcher Brooks Weber came in to pitch to the final batter in the seventh inning, earning a save on Telfer’s double play throw.

Fairfield 6

The Golden Hawks scored eight runs in the seventh inning to overcome a two-run deficit against Fairfield on June 18.
