College World Series trip includes Golden Hawks' win at St. Albert

Mid-Prairie’s baseball team swung open its offense on the way to the College World Series last week.

The 2A ninth-ranked Golden Hawks, who were in Omaha to watch an opening-round game of the World Series last Saturday, began their trip June 14 with a 14-3 win over St. Albert Catholic in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Brady Weber, a junior, had three hits in a 15-hit parade by the Golden Hawks, who scored their most lopsided win since an 18-0 victory over Tipton on May 28. Weber scored three times, stole two bases and drove in a run.

Brady’s younger brother, Brooks, was one of four Golden Hawks to get two hits. Joining him were Bowen Burmeister, Landry Gingerich and Joe Hall. Burmeister, Gingerich and Brooks Weber each drove in three runs, and each had a double.

Burmeister also hit a triple.

The Golden Hawks reached St. Albert starting pitcher Matthew Stile for eight runs and seven hits in 3.1 innings.

Carson Pence was the starting pitcher for the Golden Hawks, giving up five hits and two runs in three innings. Kurt Schneider and Conner Wiles finished up, each pitching two scoreless innings.

Owen Marshall led St. Albert (7-12) with two hits.

The next day (Saturday, June 15), the Golden Hawks were in Omaha to watch Kentucky defeat North Carolina State, 5-4.

IC Regina 13-5

The Golden Hawks scored six runs in the final two innings against Iowa City Regina Catholic, including the winning run in an extra inning, to defeat the Regals 6-5 and gain a split of a doubleheader June 10.

Regina, which had won the first game 13-2, took a 5-0 lead in the second game. Then, the Golden Hawks struck back with five runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth.

Mid-Prairie senior Brock Harland had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.

Carson Pence shut down Regina in the eighth inning for the win.

Tatem Telfer and Dylan Henry each had two hits and scored twice over the two games.

Regina freshman Savion Miller had four hits and scored three runs.

Bettendorf 11

Mid-Prairie 5

Brady Weber led the Golden Hawks with two hits and Tatem Telfer drove in two runs with a homer, but a shaky opening inning led to an 11-5 loss for Mid Prairie on June 11 at Bettendorf.

The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the first inning to take control. Bettendorf’s Ian Bell had a game-high three hits, drove in two runs and scored once.

Bowen Burmeister, Joe Hall and Brooks Weber added hits for Mid-Prairie.

Regina’s Hudson Koch and Tate Lynch combined for a 4-hitter, leading the Regals to a 2-0 win over Mid-Prairie on June 13.

Luke Traetow had two hits for the Golden Hawks, and Tatem Telfer and Brooks Weber each had one. The Golden Hawks had two runners on base in the sixth inning, but could not score as they were shut out for just the second time this season.

“I’m really proud of the way that we played today,” Mid-Prairie coach Kyle Mullet said. “I know it’s a tough loss. We played good baseball today.”

Mid-Prairie pitcher Brock Harland gave up just two hits and struck out 6 in six innings, but the Regals scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning for the win.

Jack Clark and Drew Steb scored Regina’s runs.

Mid-Prairie 6-1

West Liberty 2-9

Mid-Prairie junior Tatem Telfer struck out 9 in 3.2 innings and had two hits at the plate, leading the Golden Hawks to a 6-2 victory over West Liberty in the first game of a doubleheader played June 17.

West Liberty won the nightcap, 9-1.

Bowen Burmeister and Luke Traetow each had two hits and scored twice in the opening-game victory, and Brock Harland had two hits in the second game.

Dylan Henry drove in four runs.

Tefler gave up just one hit in his pitching start, striking out 9 and walking 6. Kale Miller, a freshman, finished up once Tefler hit 90 pitches. Miller gave up just one hit in 3.1 innings.

West Liberty scored three runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning of the second game to cruise to an eight-run win. Brady Weber and Carson Pence pitched for the Golden Hawks.

West Liberty’s Seth Axsom hit a two-run homer and Ryker Dengler drove in three runs with a double.
