The Riverside Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 31 W. 1st Street on Sunday, July 11 at about 2 p.m. The Kalona Volunteer Fire Department, Ainsworth Volunteer Fire Department, Hills Fire Department and Hills Firefighters Association also responded in mutual aid for the building fire.
The Riverside department arrived on the scene to see smoking coming from the door on the first floor of the two-story structure. The responding crews were able to make an aggressive interior attack containing the fire to the room of origin on the first floor, as well as conducting a search of the entire building, securing a water supply and checking the roof for conditions.
The building suffered smoke damage to the first and second floors, but there were no injuries sustained by civilians or fighters.
Riverside Fire Chief Chad Smothers said cause of the fire is still under investigation.
