Kylie Reinier’s final putt for par produced a smile. And why wouldn’t it?

Playing high school golf in just her second year, and the first time on varsity, Reinier completed her senior season with a 19th-place finish at the Iowa 2A Girls Golf State Tournament on May 26 and helped lead the Golden Hawks to a seventh-place finish.

“Kylie has been playing so good here in the last month, just her finishes in all the regionals and at (River Valley) Conference,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. “For a senior that has only been playing two years, that’s some good golf.”

Reinier led the Golden Hawks with a two-day score of 181 at the American Legion Post #46 Golf Course, including a birdie and five pars in the second round.

Madi Davidson, a junior, had seven pars and a birdie over two rounds, finishing with 186. Gabi Robertson, a sophomore, was seven shots back of Davidson.

The seventh-place finish was three spots better than how the Golden Hawks finished last year and their two-day score of 751 was 44 shots better than last year.

“Seventh place with this group of kids, compared to where we were at three years ago with the freshmen and how young we were, it’s quite an accomplishment,” McArtor said.

The Golden Hawks finished strong in late-season tournaments, placing fourth at the Hawk Invitational in Kalona in April, then winning every competition after that including the River Valley Girls Golf Invitational in Muscatine and a 2A regional at Kalona Golf Course.

“The kids have been playing really well,” McArtor said. “The course is a little bit longer than what we’re used to, but they adapted to that. They did a great job.”

Addison English carded a two-day total of 194, Elliott Debler carded 198 and Alex Huber finished at 213.

Reinier was an alternate for the Golden Hawks state-tournament team last year, then made it up to the state team this season with dramatic improvement.

“This year, halfway through the season, a light bulb went on or something, and golf just got easy for her,” McArtor said. “She has the best temperament, the best attitude for being a golfer. Just smiles, happy go lucky, just doesn’t let the bad shots get to her. Just moves on to the next one.”

Having started 23 games for the Golden Hawks in basketball this year, Reinier approached the big stage of a state tournament calmly.

“I really didn’t take it too seriously,” she said. “Yes, it’s state. There’s just not much I can do after state, so I was just here to have a good time and hopefully get a good score, do good with the team. I really wasn’t nervous coming into it because nothing bad can come out of doing bad here.”

Reinier and Huber were the only seniors on the state team, leaving McArtor optimistic about what’s to come in 2024.

“We’ve got a lot of talent coming back,” McArtor said. “Our JV squad’s got some good players on it. I think we’ll have a couple good freshmen coming in. There’ll be some good competition to take those two seniors’ places.”
