KALONA
“We had a very, very good day,” fire chief Jerry Zahradnek said of Kalona Fire’s pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, April 6. Although lines were long, the department cooked as fast as they could to serve pancakes and sausage to their hungry supporters. At the end of the day, the fundraiser served 3108 people who donated an average of more than $20 a plate to support the department.
Funds will go toward equipping the new pumper tanker that arrived earlier this year. The total price of the fully equipped truck is about $525,000, of which $230,000 was funded by a Riverboat grant and $40,000 from a matching grant from the City of Kalona. The community raised the remaining $255,000 by supporting pancake breakfasts.
The department sends a huge thank you to all who have supported them through their contributions.
