Hillcrest golf has been looking for a signature win this year and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

In a total team effort, the Ravens captured a Class 1A Sectional Championship for the second year in a row at the Diamond Trail Golf Club in Lynnville on May 8.

“The Ravens have played decent golf this year but not a breakout of what they are capable of yet by any means. Today was a great day,” Hillcrest coach Phil Schintler said about the Ravens performance at sectionals.

Hillcrest procured first place with season low score of 313, narrowly defeated BGM, who was the runner-up with a score of 315.

Seven schools participated and coming in first place in the individual rankings, earning medalist honors, was Hillcrest sophomore Rowan Miller.

Miller, who played the course with a brace due to an ankle injury, put together a stellar performance, finishing with a two under par 70. Not too far behind was fellow sophomore Liam Schrock who earned runner-up medalist honors with a one over par 73.

“The veterans rose to the top, literally,” coach Schintler said about Miller’s and Schrock’s performances at sectionals. “They were the top two medalists on the day. They put on a clinic.”

Seth Ours was the next highest placing Raven with an 81 to tie for 11th place. He arrived at his score of 81 after shooting a 39 in the front nine and a 42 in the back nine.

The last Raven to contribute to the first-place team score was freshman Lawson Schrock. He placed 17th but his score of 89 was vital to Hillcrest’s sectional victory.

“Lawson Schrock, who has been struggling, made a statement today. His 46 front nine and 43 back nine propelled the Ravens to a two-point Sectional victory,” coach Schintler said. “That was huge. The new golfers have to be the ones to step up. Today it happened.”

Placing 26th with 103 and 27th with 104 was Ethan Yoder and Matthew Chalupa respectively.

Up next for Hillcrest was competing for a ticket to state in a Class 1A District Tournament at Heritage Oaks in Wapello on May 14.
