MONTICELLO
Mid-Prairie’s Emmett Swartzentruber, the defending Class 2A cross country state champion, and Brooklyn Stutzman each posted top five finishes in the Sept. 14 Monticello Invitational.
Stutzman, who won her first cross country race to begin the season September 3 in Williamsburg, finished fourth in Monticello with a time of 19 minutes, 48.3 seconds. Her finish helped lead the Golden Hawks to the girls team title.
Swartzentruber placed fifth in the boys varsity race with a time of 16:53, cutting three seconds off his winning time in Williamsburg. He finished 1:33 behind winner Quentin Nauman of Epworth Western Dubuque, helping to lead the Golden Hawks to a second-place team finish.
Both Mid-Prairie teams had a pair of finishes in the top 10. Rachel Hostetler, who placed third in Williamsburg in her high school debut, finished eighth with a time of 20:21.1. Preston Yutzy, a Mid-Prairie senior, finished ninth in the boys race with a time of 17:03.9.
With five runners placing in the top 33 individually (top 27, team-scoring runners), the Golden Hawks scored 67 points in the girls race and defeated runner-up Tipton by 12 points. Tessa Brokaw finished 17th (13th in team scoring), and was followed by Dessa Poll in 21st (17th) and Hannah Rodgers in 33rd (27th).
Denver won the boys team title with 57 points, defeating Mid-Prairie by 26 points. The Golden Hawks had five runners place in the top 33 in the team scoring. Following Swartzentruber and Yutzy were Jayse Yoder in 18th (17th, team scoring), Maxon Swartzentruber in 20th (19th) and Luke Brokaw in 36th (33rd).
Ivy Reschly finished third in the JV girls race, trailing the leader by just 20 seconds.
