A Highland school record that stood for over half of a century fell during the Pankoke Relays at Winfield-Mt. Union on Thursday. 

The 4x100-meter relay of Kadin Jepson, Taylor Day, Tyler Thompson, and Connor Grinstead finished in first place with a Huskie-record time of 46.02.

“It feels pretty great, to beat a record that’s been standing for 51 years” said junior Connor Grinstead, who ran the anchor leg on Thursday. 

“The handoffs are crucial, obviously, with those really short distances, so we’ve been mixing in different people and different orders to try to see what fits best,” Grinstead explained. 

Highland coach Nick Ehret said that the conditions were right on Thursday night, and the 4x100 had plenty of time to work on handoffs with no other meets scheduled for the week. 

“We’ve been close to breaking it a couple other times, so the boys knew they were close,” Ehret said. “We haven’t been able to run that in a couple weeks due to various things and they were really excited to finally be able to compete again. We had good handoffs and all four ran a good race so it was nice to see them be able to accomplish that.”

The Huskies have their sights set on the school 4x200-meter record next. Jepson, Brenton Bonebreak, Thompson and Grinstead have the 13th overall time in 1A, just two tenths of a second short of the current Huskie record. On Thursday, the Huskie 4x200 finished in third place despite dropping the baton. 

Grinstead finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.34, his new career-best and the 25th fastest time in 1A this year.  His second-place finish of 23.45 in the 200-meter dash was also a new personal record. 

“We put a sprint med team together that got second their first time out — Taylor Day, Brenton Bonebrake, Kadin Jepson, and Tyler Thompson, which was nice to see,” Ehret said. “I think we can get better in that race the more we run it also.”

Highland finished eighth out of nine teams, while the Lone Tree boys finished sixth. The Lions’ distance medley of Cade Patterson, Alex Viner, Cade Shield and Nick Staltzman finished second with a time of 4:01.97. Staltzman finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.25 and Cade Patterson was third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.65.

The Highland girls finished fourth out of eight teams. The Huskie 4x200-meter relay of Mackinze Hora, Katelyn Waters, MyLei Smith, and Sarah Burton was four seconds off of its season-best, but still finished first with a time of 1:57.78. Burton finished second in the long jump with a leap of 15-03.5 and third in the 200-meter race with a time of 28.43.

The Lone Tree girls finished eighth at Winfield, led by a third-place finish of 13-09.5 in the long jump from Avery Lisk.
