WAPELLO

Two teams undefeated in conference play, Highland and Wapello, faced off in a pivotal showdown last week and unfortunately for the Huskies, the Arrows continued to be a thorn in their sides.

Increasing their streak of wins against the Huskies to 13 in a row, Wapello earned a sweeping 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-11) victory over Highland on Oct. 3.

The Arrows keep their conference record unblemished (5-0) while Highland suffered its first conference defeat (5-1).

This game served as a quick rematch for these teams as they faced off at the SEISC tourney finals in the final weekend of September. Highland (with its last win over the Arrows coming in 2014) hoped to flip the script against their conference rival but, Wapello did not waver.

Wapello won the first set in comfortable fashion, building up a double digit lead over the Huskies to eventually take the set by 13. Not discouraged by the lopsided loss, Highland found more of a rhythm on offense and defense in the next set.

In a competitive second set, Wapello built up a lead similar to the previous set but this time around Highland provided the answers needed to keep up.

Despite trailing 16-10, the Huskies went on a 10-6 run to decrease their deficit to two. While Highland proved to be more formidable in this set, Wapello did not lose its composure and ended up winning the set by three.

Carrying their momentum into the third set, Wapello jumped out to a towering 20-5 lead. Highland showed a valiant effort to bring their score up to 11 but the Arrows completed the sweep by winning the set by 14.

Leading all players in kills was Wapello freshman Mila Jordan with 11 and leading all players in assists was Wapello sophomore Annaka Greiner with 31.

For Highland its leader in kills was Adeline Krotz with six and fellow senior Laney Skelton recorded a team high nine assists. On defense Lilly Barre, a senior, led Highland in digs with 23.

Up next for Highland (16-11) is a road conference game against Columbus (9-14) on Oct. 10.
