On Wednesday, August 21, at 11:21 p.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a Yamaha Sports Motorcycle for traffic violations near Ireland Ave NW and Interstate 80 WB off ramp. The driver of the motorcycle refused to stop for law enforcement, rapidly accelerating away from the pursing deputy. The driver continued to drive erratically through Tiffin and continued westbound on Highway 6 driving in excess of 100 mph. The driver turned southbound on Highway 109 travelling into Oxford. The motorcycle driver lost control and crashed near South Augusta Ave and 295 Street NW in Oxford.

Immediate lifesaving measures were performed on the driver, but ultimately the driver was declared deceased on scene by medical personnel. The driver was identified as Joseph Halstead, 33, of Wellman.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Ambulance Services, Oxford Fire Department, University of Iowa AirCare, Johnson County Medical Examiner, and Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center.
