Wellman man Willie Garrett was recently sentenced to six years in prison on charges of felony domestic abuse and possession of a controlled substance.
Garrett, 48, pleaded guilty on July 10 and was sentenced during an August 28 court appearance.
His sentence stems from domestic abuse assault by strangulation causing bodily injury, a Class D felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. The remaining charges against him were dismissed.
The case dates back to March 31, when the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Wellman residence after a neighbor reported that a child had come to the neighbor’s home and reported a possible domestic assault. Deputies returned to the residence approximately two hours later, located Garrett and arrested him.
Garrett was originally charged with violating a no-contact order, three counts of child endangerment, four counts of obstructing emergency communications, domestic abuse assault and third-degree kidnapping.
Garrett has remained in custody since March 2026 and could become eligible for release as early as May or June 2029.
