Ten ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch together at Wellman’s Senior Center on a chilly but sunny Thursday afternoon. After savoring their cheeseburger soup, relishes, Jell-o, rolls, and cake, they called the Feb. 15 meeting to order. The club president welcomed them with a fitting Valentine poem about friends.

Minutes were read, followed by the treasurer’s report. A letter was read from a former member, thanking current members for a Christmas card. There was no old or new business, but club members were reminded that their next meeting will be a tour of JFH Metal in Wellman.

The day’s program was “Show and Tell,” where each person shared something interesting about their hobbies, collections, family, or little-known personal facts. Members enjoyed a wide variety of reports, starting with a first chair trumpeter and basketball player who made 33 points in one of her high school games. One gal is the youngest of 10 children. In the 70’s she got a girls softball program up and running in Wellman by starting and coaching girls softball.

One flexible lady demonstrated a talent her grandmother had, that of bending to touch her palms to the floor at 70 years of age. Another woman likes crocheting and needlepoint, doing tiny projects like dollhouse rugs. Two women became orthopedic nurses. Several enjoy sewing, quilting, antiques, and flower gardening.

Members were shown a book called “After Dinner Gardening” and told how it taught the reader about starting plants with seeds from the foods served at dinner. One person showed several examples of her artwork. She likes to paint on wood projects made by her husband. One lady met her husband on the Osceola school bus. She’s an exercise fiend and has taught exercise classes such as kick-boxing. Members also heard from one who played 6 on 6 basketball and has fond memories of her team taking 2nd place in the 1968 IA HS State Tourney. The special bond with sports teammates was a great experience.

The Garden Club meeting was adjourned after learning many unique facts about each and every person present.
