The Mid-Prairie Home School Assistance Program provides support and assistance to parents who serve as the primary educators for their children. Currently, 267 families have enrolled 592 students from 20 different school districts, including Mid-Prairie.

The program pairs home educators, usually parents, with an Iowa-licensed Supervising Teacher to encourage and support the home instruction of the students who are enrolled. Additionally, the program offers monthly enrichment classes, field trips, music programming, special events, parent learning opportunities, and a high school diploma program that parents may choose to participate in.

The Home School Assistance Program is housed in the Mid-Prairie Home School Education Center (HSEC), which was formerly known as Washington Township. This building holds classes, events, and meeting spaces for our homeschooling families all week long.

On Mondays, the program hosts a Middle School day, Tuesdays are mostly High School coursework, Wednesdays and Thursdays offer Enrichment Classes for our Elementary students and Strings classes, and Fridays are filled with Band and Advanced Strings opportunities for our enrolled students.

Since our classes and activities are typically just one day a week, parents remain the primary instructors and are responsible for teaching their students. By partnering with HSAP, parents can choose the coursework that is just right for their child and offer chances for students and parents to learn together.

2024-2025 Enrollment Day is March 1 at the Home School Education Center. If you have any questions about the program or homeschooling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help!

We are better together at MP-HSAP!

Rachel Kerns is director of the Mid-Prairie Home School Assistance Program. She can be reached at 319-683-2280 or rkerns@mphawks.org.
