Teetering week for Lady Lions

After an up-and-down week for the Lady Lions, both winning and losing big, they’ve found themselves in a bit of a slump, three straight losses. They started their week playing the Columbus Wildcats, losing 12-1. The Lady Lions fell to the Wildcats in game two of the year as well.

Returning home, the Lady Lions took on the Central Lee Hawks, losing 11-2. Just like the baseball counterpart, the Lady Lions found themselves down 4-0 before they even had a chance to drive home a run.

Central Lee did not look back, scoring another three runs in the top of the third, leading 7-0. They scored in every frame minus the second and fourth, getting over their fear of even numbers in the sixth.

With sophomore Cate Sexton occupying the plate, a wild pitch by the Hawks brought home sophomore Rylee Shield for the Lady Lions first run in the bottom of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Shield grounded out, a fielder’s choice to take the out at first allowing sophomore Kayleigh Rundlett to score. The Lady Lions still down 8-2.

The Lady Lions never stopped having fun, chanting loudly from their dugout, and seemingly having a great time in the face of defeat. Their drive to keep competing stayed intact as well.

The Hawks would go on to score three more runs, winning 11-2.

Right back on the road, the Lady Lions traveled to Louisa-Muscatine, losing 19-9. The Lady Lions have not beat the Falcons since June 24, 2014.

The Lady Lions are led by sophomore Vivian Zaruba with 20 hits, 26 runs and five RBIs. Sophomore Alex Dautremont leads the team in RBIs with 15. Dautremont is the ace on the mound, earning most starts, hoisting a 6.20 ERA through 44 innings.

Eighth grader Abby Zaruba leads the team in strikeouts with 50 and wins at four.

Entering the semi-final week of the season, the Lady Lions have six games in five days. They will play Van Buren County (June 19), Wapello (June 20), Danville (doubleheader on June 21), Winfield-Mt Union (June 22) and Highland (June 23). They’ll get the weekend off before playing Holy Trinity Catholic on June 26 for the final regular season matchup of the year.
