Schlabaugh wins opening match to reach state tournament quarterfinals

Highland’s returning placewinner, Easton Schlabaugh, is into the quarterfinals of the state tournament for the first time.

Schlabaugh pinned Nashua-Plainfield freshman Nic Brase with nine seconds remaining in the first period of his opening round match.  Last year, the Highland junior lost his first match before winning three straight to reach the podium. His quick pin on Thursday put him into Friday's quarterfinals.

Carlos Valenzuela faced Central Springs senior Brock Mathers in the consolation bracket after dropping his opening match to No. 2 Garret Funk of Don Bosco.

Valenzuela took a 2-1 lead with a reversal in the final period, but a locked hands call cost him a critical point. But he rode out the final 1:42 of regulation to extend his season. Mathers got the only takedown of the match half a minute into overtime.
