RIVERSIDE
The Riverside City Council approved a $2 increase in firefighter calls at its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, July 3.
The approval, which is retroactive to July 1, 2022 so that it includes payments in Fiscal Year 2023, increases each call for firefighters from $5 to $7.
The Riverside Fire Department is a volunteer department in which firefighters participate in training and other meetings, in addition to actual responses, or calls, to fires or other emergencies.
Firefighters are compensated on the number of calls they respond to, and also receive annual stipends depending on their ranking and training sessions. The pay-per-call program began in 2020.
Since then, the number of calls to the department have increased 40%, Toby Hancock, Deputy Chief, told The News.
