Red Cross vehicle gets long-awaited welcome

RIVERSIDE

On Thursday, Aug. 29, members of the Washington County Riverboat Foundation (WCRF), American Red Cross, and community gathered outside the Riverside Casino to cut the ribbon on the new Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle that arrived in June. The vehicle was made possible by a $100,000 WCRF grant awarded in Spring 2022.

Getting to meet the new vehicle and cut the ribbon has been quite the journey. Due to supply and shipping constraints, building and delivering the multi-functional emergency vehicle took longer than expected. When it finally was delivered earlier this year, it was immediately sent out to provide disaster assistance in northwest Iowa due to Missouri River flooding, causing the ribbon-cutting date in June to be rescheduled. In July, a second ribbon-cutting date was missed, as the vehicle was dispatched to Houston, Texas to help Hurricane Beryl victims.

In northwest Iowa, the vehicle helped serve 31,000 meals and 32,000 snacks. It also delivered supplies, including about 5,000 rakes, tarps, and cleanup kits. The disaster relief provided by the Red Cross is always free to those who need it.

Clearly, the ERV was a needed addition to the Red Cross fleet and will continue to be put to good use.
