RIVERSIDE

Pay for substitute teachers in Highland Community Schools will be going up $5 a day in the 2024-25 school year.

The Highland School Board approved an increase in daily rates for teacher subs from $135 to $140 at its regularly scheduled monthly meeting held July 8.

“We’ll be competitive with everybody out there,” said Ken Crawford, Schools Superintendent.

Crawford recommended the increase due to longer school days in the new school year, which was a result of the district going to a four-day week for most of the 2024-25 school calendar.

Sharing with IC West

The Board agreed to athletic program sharing with Iowa City West in two sports and with Hillcrest Academy for drill team.

The Huskies extended a sharing agreement in boys and girls bowling with IC West and also restarted a sharing in boys and girls swimming with West.

Highland’s girls wrestling team included several athletes from Washington High School this past school year, an agreement that may extend into 2024-25.

Road Extension

The Board heard a presentation from Cole Smith, City Administrator in Riverside, about plans to create a Cherry Lane Extension south of Riverside Elementary School.

Board members, along with Crawford, expressed opinions in favor of an easement that would allow the road to be built, with a sidewalk, without the purchase of property. The road extension is being considered by the Riverside City Council in order to make the area around the school safe for schoolchildren and other pedestrians.

The school’s parking lot is often used by motorists to access neighborhoods west of Highland Elementary. Officials are hoping an east-west extension of Cherry Lane would ease the congestion.

Board Actions

The Board approved a shared personnel agreement with Great Prairie AEA for librarian services at a cost of $22,000.

The Board approved the sale of a bus to Marion Avenue Baptist Church for $4,506.

The Board approved a number of handbook policies for all schools, and activities, including codes of conduct and penalties.

The Board approved the appointment of Jeff Hoft, custodian.

The Board approved a list of legislative priorities, including supplemental school aid, bond issues, mental health and private school requirements.

The Board approved a number of policy updates.

Next Meeting

The board will hold its next formal meeting at 5 p.m. August 12.
