No. 3 Lisbon overpowers Highland

Posted

Coming off their best offensive performance of the season the Huskies faced a daunting task as they went on the road to challenge the Lisbon Lions, a team ranked third in the state.

With their talent on full display the Lions scored 47 points in the first quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach after only 12 minutes of play.

Running into the indomitable wall that is Lisbon the Huskies remain winless this season as the Lions earned a 57-6 victory on Sept. 15.

The Lions (4-0) stay perfect on the year while Highland (0-4) continues to seek their first win since 2021.

Explosive on offense and stout on defense everything went right for the Lions in the first quarter.

It proved to be difficult for the Huskies to get into a rhythm offensively in the first quarter as their starting field position was consistently near their own end zone. Anytime they tried to move the ball in the first frame it resulted in a punt or a turnover.

Turnovers plagued the Huskies as they ended the game losing four fumbles and throwing one interception. One of those fumbles occurred on a punt return, which led to a scoop and score by Lisbon senior Michael Gadberry.

Speaking of Lisbon seniors, Baylor Speidel led all rushers with 133 rushing yards on eight carries. He also scored two rushing touchdowns.

Speidel is in the middle of putting together a noteworthy senior year, as he leads his team with 546 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

After the avalanche of points in the first quarter the scoring cooled down considerably.

Lisbon added to their total with a rushing TD in the second quarter which also happened to be the last TD they scored in the game.

Five of the eight touchdowns Lisbon scored were rushing touchdowns.

Lisbon quarterback, junior Dakota Clark, threw for 70 yards and a TD. He ended the night with a passing quarterback rating of 181.3, completing five passes on six attempts.

The third quarter saw no points scored and in the final frame the Lions connected on a field goal.

With less than two minutes left in the game Highland broke through offensively and scored a touchdown to avoid the shutout.

Highland QB, junior Sage Hartley-Norman, connected with his fellow junior, Ayden Havel, for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

A great high arching pass from Hartley-Norman landed perfectly in the waiting arms of Havel, who used his speed to get past the Lisbon defense. Highland attempted to score two points after the TD, but it was unsuccessful.

Keeping his scoring streak intact, this was Havel’s third game in a row where he caught a TD. He has become a reliable and dangerous target in the pass game for Highland this season.

With Highland scoring a TD in the fourth quarter and with Lisbon only scoring a field goal the Huskies did end up outscoring the Lions in the second half.
