Mid-Prairie FFA looks back on 2023

In February 2023, Sub-District Career Development Events were held in Montezuma with eleven members participating.  Members communicated with Mr. Foster’s middle school classes throughout the year to present information to the Ag Life Science classes.  A faculty breakfast was held in appreciation of everything teachers do for members. 

Thirteen members of the Mid-Prairie FFA chapter attended the Legislative Symposium.  Members attended the Johnson County Cattlemen’s Banquet, and the Washington Keokuk County Corn & Soybean Growers and the Washington County Cattlemen Banquet. The chapter hosted a student teacher from Iowa State University.

In March, Mid-Prairie FFA members also attended the District CDE’s with Public Speaking Secretary’s Book and Reporter’s Scrapbook competing as well as four students taking the Greenhand Test.  The Secretary’s Book and Reporter’s Scrapbook advanced to state.

Marissa Cline finished up her year of service as the SE FFA District Secretary. The Food for America program was presented to all third grade Mid-Prairie Elementary School students. 

In April, the 18 members of the FFA chapter traveled to Iowa State University in Ames for the State FFA Convention.  The Reporter’s Scrapbook received 4th place gold. Six members of the chapter received their Iowa FFA Degrees.  The greenhand quiz team received a silver and the Ag Sales team received a gold.  The Biotechnology team received 7th place gold. The Chapter Display received a top 10 gold rating.

Members hosted Drive a Tractor to School Day.  Members presented information about the Mid-Prairie FFA to the Wellman and Kalona Rotary Clubs. Members traveled to Brenneman Pork and Eldon C. Stutsman, Inc. for a chapter tour. Two members presented papers at the Iowa Youth Institute.  

In May, the Annual FFA Banquet was held honoring FFA members.  Members picked up trash along Hwy 22 as a part of the Adopt-a-Highway program.  The Buckle Up or Eat Glass seatbelt check was held at the High School.  Members assisted in working with flags at the Kalona and Wellman Cemeteries.  Members planted flowers at the University of Iowa.  

In June, fifteen Mid-Prairie FFA members attended the Chapter Officer Leadership Conference at Louisa-Muscatine.  Members assisted during the West Chester Cleanup Day.  

In July, members participated in the Wellman 4th of July parade.  Many members showed livestock at the Washington and Johnson Co. Fairs. The chapter hosted a cookout and kickball for all FFA members.  

August found sixteen members of the MP chapter showing or assisting at the State Fair.  Three members served as Iowa State Fair Grandstand Ushers. 

The school year began with the Annual Ice Cream Social.  The chapter once again collected trash along our Adopt-a-Highway roadway.  Members also cleaned up trash after all home football games. 

Members organized a pull-tab drive for the Ronald McDonald House.  Eighteen members attended the ISU Extension Ag Discovery Day. The Mid-Prairie FFA had a float in the Mid-Prairie Homecoming Parade. 

October was spent with 15 members participating in the NW FFA Sub-District Freshman/Sophomore Livestock judging contest.  Nine members of the MP chapter attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. 

The chapter provided Harvest Meals for local farmers. Members planted trees to replace trees lost due to the tornado damage.  Members went to the elementary schools to present information about agriculture. 

In November, fifteen Mid-Prairie FFA members participated in the District Greenhand Fire-up Conference. The chapter hosted a State FFA Officer for a day. Twenty members participated in the Ignite, Amplify and Transform Leadership Conferences at the FFA Enrichment Center.

December brought the fruit and cheese sales to an end and the Christmas Party. FFA members sponsored Christmas events for seminars.  Five members presented about the National FFA Convention trip at the Mid-Prairie school board. 

January 2024 was spent preparing for contests at the Sub-District and District levels.  Five members completed their Iowa FFA Degree applications.  Eight members participated in the Legislative Symposium by meeting with our senator and representatives.
