Mid-Prairie claims state-qualifying meet championship

WILLIAMSBURG

An exceptional first place victory for the Golden Hawks at the 2A state qualifying meet in Williamsburg on Oct. 19 opened the door to state once again.

This is the ninth year in a row Mid-Prairie has had a girls cross-country team secure a bid to state.

On a cool autumn day Mid-Prairie, the number one ranked team in Class 2A, claimed the team title with a score of 29. Van Meter scored 43 for a runner up finish and Willimasburg placed third with 89 points.

The top 15 runners and the top three teams advanced to state and the Golden Hawks finished the meet with six runners placing in the top 15.

Having competed in this Williamsburg course in the past, it was a familiar race for a Golden Hawk team that consisted of five seniors and two freshmen.

Last week in Iowa City Danielle Hostetler finished as the runner up, but It didn’t take long for the standout senior to enter the first place spotlight once again.

Entering the state qualifiers as the number 2 ranked runner in Class 2A, Hostetler conquered the course in 19:09 to place first.

“Danielle's win was expected, even with some great competition on the girls side.  She ran well and looked smooth throughout the race,” Mid-Prairie coach Jeremy Meyers said.

Her time was over 40 seconds faster than Van Meter junior Emma McCoy in second place. This marks the fourth year in a row Hostetler has won the individual championship at the state qualifiers.

Mid-Priaire did not have to wait long for more Golden Hawks to complete the course.

Coming in at number four in 20:20 was freshman Brooklyn Stutzman and right after her was teammate Greta Sieren, a senior. Both of them set new personal bests with Sieren’s fifth place time being 20:28.

An additional set of back to back finishes awaited Mid-Prairie as seniors Abby Fleming and Phoebe Shetler placed 13th and 14th respectively with times of 21:00 and 21:09.

Not too far behind was the final Golden Hawk to cross the finish line, senior Annika Poll. Poll ended the second to last cross-country meet of her high school career with a time of 21:34 to place 18th.

No stranger to the podium, the Mid-Prairie girls were all smiles when they were presented a Cross-Country State Qualifier banner after the races were over.

History is on the line at the upcoming state meet, as Hostetler will be seeking her fourth individual 2A state cross-country championship, one for every year of her high school career. If she accomplishes this feat it will also give Mid-Prairie its eighth straight individual championship.

“The culture of working hard and valuing everyone on the team, not just the fastest or most talented kids, and caring about each other is really what makes MPXC so special,” coach Meyers said. “Ultimately though, much of that credit has to go to Mark Hostetler and the culture he's built in his time at Mid-Prairie.”

The Class 2A State Championship meet takes place at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Oct 28 with a start time of 10:00 am.
