MT.  PLEASANT

The Mapleleaf Athletic Complex, the home track of the Mt. Pleasant Panthers was the place to be this past week as the Panthers hosted a jam-packed co-ed track meet and among their many visitors was the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks.

Getting a chance to finally display their skill in an outdoor venue opposed to an indoor one, Mid-Prairie battled it out against 11 other schools at Mt. Pleasant on March 28.

Bringing in a total of three 1st place finishes for Mid-Prairie was junior Jaden Stafford.

Stafford finished well ahead of his competition to grab the gold in the 101-, 201-, and 401-meter wheelchair races. Finishing as the runner-up in all three of those races was Josh Anderson of Washington.

It was a close finish in the 1600m run but crossing the finish first with a gold earning time of 4:36 was Mid-Prairie junior Emmett Swartzentruber.

Second place belonged to IC, City High freshman David Randall with a time of 4:38. Also competing in this race was Mid-Prairie junior Jayse Yoder who placed 8th in 5:06. Yoder’s best placement of the day came in the 800m, finishing in 2nd with a time of 1:59.

Swartzentruber’s strong performances in long distance running events didn’t stop there. In the 3200m run he grabbed 3rd place in 9:45. Only the top three finishers in this event ended with a sub-10-minute time. Only two spots behind Swartzentruber was fellow teammate Preston Yutzy who placed 5th in 10:17.

In the field events, while it may still be early in the season, Burke Berry continues to impress with his throwing prowess for Mid-Prairie.

Berry, a junior, placed 3rd in the shot-put event with a throw of 45-08 and he was the runner-up in the discus toss with a throw of 134-08. Also competing in the discus event was Mid-Prairie sophomore Kaden Kos. Kos finished in 4th place with his farthest throw being 122-01.

Up next for the Mid-Prairie boys is competing in the Lone Tree Invite on April 8.
