Born October 17, 1916 near Sharon Center, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Hershberger) Rhodes. She attended rural Boone School.
Lydia L. Scalf, 83, of Wellman died Wednesday, December 8, 1999 in the McCreedy Home, Washington, following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services were Saturday, December 11, in the Wellman Cemetery with the Reverend Gene Carpenter officiating.
Born October 17, 1916 near Sharon Center, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Hershberger) Rhodes. She attended rural Boone School.
She was united in marriage to Merton Scalf December 8, 1958 in Sharon United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Wellman where Mrs. Scalf was a homemaker.
After her husband’s death in 1979, she moved to Washington.
She was a member of Wellman Baptist Church and the WRC in West Chester.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Burtch of Iowa City and Barbara and Alan Niswander of Paonia, Colorado; five step-daughters and their husbands, Carolyn Peck of Dallas, Texas; Ethel Dayton of Washington; Iva and Ival Redlinger of Wellman; Doris Hayes and Wade of Wellman; and Evelyn and Robert Benninger of Muskegan, Michigan; three step-sons and their wives, Calvin and Nellie Scalf of Wellman; Daniel and Linda Scalf of Maple Plain, Minnesota; and George and Anna Marie Scalf of Ottumwa; seven grandchildren, twenty-six step-grandchildren and a number of step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a step-daughter, Louisa Hill; a step-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Emma Weisner, Veda Carpenter and Ada Metz; and two brothers, Ivan Rhodes and Raymond Rhodes.
