The November elections have concluded and the two seats on the Lone Tree school board have been filled. Alex Ogren won back his seat with ease.
Jennifer Eden was welcomed aboard as the new board member, replacing Joel Yedlik who will officially retire after the Dec. 6 board workshop.
The board listened to Joe Donovan, the Activity and Transportation Director, to start the meeting. He began by saying the transportation vehicles are in good working condition.
He did mention that two vans have exceeded 150,000 miles, though he does not know the lifespan of said vehicles.
Donovan would like a staggered approach to replacing vehicles when necessary, so the school does not need to replace two at a time. He also mentioned the school might need another driver for events as it was a challenge during the fall sports season.
After Donovan finished with transportation, he switched topics to focus on activities. Donovan mentioned setting up meets for wrestling and that the girls’ wrestling team had rostered just two kids. They have seven meets where Donovan hopes they will pick up all the experience they need.
The conversation finished with Esports. Donovan and the board shared concerns over scheduling between Esports and traditional sports such as football and basketball.
Donovan gave an example from the football season. He mentioned a kid ran the wrong route in a football game because he missed a practice due to Esports. Donovan said this could’ve led to injury, and overall, it hurts the team.
The board has placed Esports on their Dec. 6 workshop agenda for further discussion.
Old business
At this meeting, the board approved bid documents for the gym HVAC project, setting a public hearing for the matter on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.
They also finalized their two district goals as focusing “on having a connected and positive culture with the intent of attracting and retaining high performing staff and students” and being “fiscally responsible and identify appropriate opportunities for the greatest benefit of our staff and students.”
The board will go over these goals again in January to discuss appropriate action steps and outcomes.
New business
The board concluded this meeting with a quick run through of new business items. They assigned board president Rob Sladek to the Library Advisory Board, which meets quarterly. They also renewed Edgenuity and approved a string of board polices discussed at the last workshop meeting.
Finally, they outlined an agenda for their next board meeting. The board will meet again on Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m., where they will swear-in Eden and choose a board president and vice president.
