Lions string together back-to-back conference wins

LONE TREE

There is no better place to break a losing streak than at home and that is exactly what the Lions did this past week.

In front of their home faithful, Lone Tree collected their first conference win of the season and put an end to a four-game losing streak when they defeated the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons, 10-0, on June 6.

It was a shutout win for Lone Tree (2-5) and it was the first time this season they recorded double digit runs. For Louisa-Muscatine (2-7) this was the second time this year they were unable to find the home plate.

This game lasted six innings and Lone Tree scored in every inning except for one. They scored their inning high in the fifth, with four Lions reaching home.

Getting the win on the mound was junior Jack Patterson. Giving up no hits and no runs, Patterson had a phenomenal day as a pitcher, striking out three and allowing one walk.

When up to bat, Patterson had a team high two RBIs on one hit and scored one run himself. Also obtaining a hit for Lone Tree was Emmett Burke, Maddox Jondle, and McKoy Boardman. When it came to baserunning Burke stole a team high four bases and Jondle was not too far behind, stealing three of his own.

Lone Tree 15, Wapello 12

With their first win and their second win being separated by four games, Lone Tree decided to get in the win column quicker this time.

Going on the road for a conference clash, the Lions earned back-to-back wins by defeating the Wapello Indians on June 7.

A high scoring contest, Lone Tree (3-5) showed they have what it takes to earn a wire-to-wire victory, holding the lead for the entire game and scoring at least one run in every inning. Wapello (2-7) attempted to rally late but fell short to increase their losing streak to four in a row.

Through the first three innings, the Lions managed to build up a 10-5 advantage. Lone Tree added two more runs to their lead before Wapello scored five in the fifth to cut their deficit to only two.

After scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh, Lone Tree headed into the bottom of the seventh with a five-run lead. Needing to tie or take the lead, Wapello put two runs on the board, but the Lions’ defense allowed no more to clinch the victory.

The win on the mound went to Lone Tree freshman Owen Eden, who threw 60 pitches in three innings. In those innings, Eden had three strikeouts and allowed four hits.

It was an unfortunate day to be a baseball as this game ended with a total of 30 hits and 21 one of those belonged to Lone Tree.

Each finishing the game with three hits was Emmett Burke, Maddox Jondle, Ethan Bockelman, Jack Patterson, and Brock Nebergall. Leading the Lions with a team high four hits was junior Brody Magruder.

Up next for Lone Tree (3-5) is a road conference game against the Winfield-Mt Union Wolves (3-4) on June 14.
