Lion hurdlers move on to state with second-place finish

A second-place finish at the Class 1A qualifier on May 13 qualified the Lone Tree boys shuttle hurdle squad for this week’s state championship meet in Des Moines.

Andrew Gauley, Ethan Willoz, Cade Patterson and Alex Viner will compete for the Lions in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle prelims at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Drake Stadium. The finals are scheduled for 3:35 p.m. Saturday.

They finished runner-up to Lisbon in the 1A qualifier at WACO High School with a time of 1:06.99. The Lions are ranked 22nd in a 24-team field. Lisbon, which won the qualifier with a time of 1:01.96, wound up as the No. 2 seed.

A number of Lone Tree athletes finished among the top 10 in their events at the 1A qualifier.

Although none of the Lions qualified for the state championship meet on the girls side, Avery Lisk placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 13-11 and Kasey Chown was 10th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.42 seconds.

Lilly Mills was 15th in the girls 400 with a time of 1:21.07.

Tyler Bell finished seventh in the boys discus with a throw of 116-10. Viner placed eighth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.59 seconds and Cade Shield was eighth in the long jump with a distance of 17-5.5.

Lone Tree runners had five top-15 finishes in the middle distance races. Alberto Cortes placed eighth in the 400 with a time of 57.58 seconds and was 11th in the 800 with a time of 2:18.61. Nick Saltzman finished ninth in the 1600 with a time of 4:55.40 and was followed by teammate Cal Christofferson in 15th place with a time of 5:20.33. Christofferson also placed 13th in the 800 with a time of 2:20.88.

In addition to qualifying for the state meet in the shuttle hurdle, the Lone Tree boys finished among the top 10 in five other relay races, including fifth place in both the 4x400 relay and distance medley.

The Lone Tree girls finished fourth in the distance medley, and 10th in the 4x200 and 800 sprint relays.
