Huskies update record books during state meet weekend

The Highland boys sprint relays have been setting new records all season, and that didn’t stop at the state meet.

Both the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays finished in the top half of the field, running the fastest times in program history.

“We really couldn’t have asked for a better performance,” coach Nick Ehret said. “It was a great way to end our year up at state.”

The 4x200 of Kadin Jepson, Brenton Bonebrake, Tyler Thompson and Connor Grinstead finished 12th with a time of 1:33.46.

“Without having last year, and feeling robbed, it feels great to make it here,” Grinstead said. “We’ve got one senior so it feels great to do it for him. It feels amazing to be out here.”

The Huskies also set a new record of 45.03 in the 4x100. Jepson, Taylor Day, Thompson and Grinstead were seeded 23rd, but finished 11th.

It was the fifth time the Huskies celebrated a new record during the season, something senior Kadin Jepson reflected on after his final race.

“I was hoping we were going to get a few school records, but I didn’t expect basically five school records broken, even though some of them were ours, over the span of the year,” he said.

“This has been my best season in five years of track and I’m very happy with what we’ve done.”

Grinstead also competed in the open 200-meter dash in the rain on Thursday. He finished 18th with a time of 23.58.

“It was interesting,” Grinstead said. “Can’t say I’ve ever run in pouring rain before, but I ran my best time of the year in it. This whole atmosphere — there’s nothing like it.

“It makes your heart pound, the adrenaline flows. There’s nothing like it.”

It was the first time at the state meet for each of the Highland boys, and four of the five participants will return next season.

“We only lose one senior Kadin Jepson, who is a huge loss, he started both relays,” Ehret said, “but we return four core sprinters in Connor Grinstead, Brenton Bonebrake, Tyler Thompson, and Taylor Day and we’re hoping to add a few more guys next year so the future is bright.”
