Players on Highland’s bench jumped up as the final seconds ticked off the clock Tuesday night.
Cheers rolled down from the bleachers.
Clinging to a one-point lead, Highland held on to defeat Columbus 45-44 in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North girls basketball showdown.
The loss was the first in regulation play this season for Columbus (9-2).
Highland senior forward Sarah Burton had a monster game, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing a career-high 21 rebounds as the Huskies (9-3) won for the third time in four games.
“We’ve got something to build off of now,” said Huskies head coach Jody Fink.
Burton is the second-leading scorer in the conference and the season leader in rebounds by 55 boards over Hillcrest’s Delaney Shaw.
Battling against Columbus’ full-court pressure defense, which resulted in 33 Highland turnovers, the Huskies outscored the Wildcats 21-10 in the third quarter to take a 38-33 lead. Columbus answered with a run to put the Wildcats back in front, but Highland delivered late and held off the Wildcats in Columbus’ final possession.
Highland senior forward Stella Slaymaker had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Burton added 4 steals and 3 blocked shots.
Lily Coil led Columbus with 15 points.
Columbus junior Ariana Vergara, who ranks No. 5 in the SEISC North in scoring, was held to 8 points on 2-of-14 shooting. She had a game-high 5 steals on defense.
“That’s a good team,” Fink said.
The Wildcats’ only other loss of the season came in overtime to North Cedar by a score of 48-44. They’re the only ones to defeat Lone Tree this season.
