Highland softball goes 4-2 during busy week

Highland’s softball team played six games between Tuesday, June 11 and Monday, June 17, going 4-2 during the stretch, reaching a record of 10-6.

Their six games were filled with ample scoring. On Tuesday, June 11, the Huskies toppled the Lone Tree Lady Lions 11-4; on Wednesday, June 12, the Huskies fell to the Davenport West Falcons 6-2; on Thursday, June 13, the Huskies beat the Pekin Panthers 15-3; on Friday, June 14, Highland completed the sweep against the WACO Warriors with a combined game total of 33-0 – 19-0 in game one and 14-0 in game two; and finally, on Monday, June 17, the Huskies lost to the Burlington-Notre Dame Falcons 10-6, concluding their busy stretch.

Highland 11, Lone Tree 4:

A quiet first two innings for the Huskies and Lady Lions translated into an explosive third inning where the Huskies scored a majority of their runs, six, as Lone Tree answered with one of their own.

Highland added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning, adding one more in the top of the sixth to bring home 11 runs.

Lone Tree tallied one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning, leading to the 11-4 conclusion.

Senior Sarah Burton, sophomore Mackenzie Davis and eighth grader Mayla Singbell led the Huskies with two hits apiece. Davis brought home four runs, Highland’s RBI leader.

Lone Tree junior Rylee Shield and Freshmen Olivia Magruder and Addison McCullough led the Lady Lions with two hits apiece.

Lone Tree dropped to 6-5 after the conference loss to Highland.

Davenport West 6, Highland 2:

The Davenport West Falcons jumped to a 2-0 lead after two innings and never looked back, adding two more runs in the third and fourth inning, entering the fifth with a  4-1 lead.

Highland would cut the lead in half when they scored in the bottom of the fifth. Unfortunately for the Huskies, this would be their last run of the night.

The Falcons added two more runs in the top of the seventh to earn a commanding 6-2 win.

The Falcons rose to 4-12 after toppling Highland.

Highland 15, Pekin 3:

Highland wasted no time, scoring three runs in the top of the first.

Pekin would score two runs in the bottom of the second, keeping the Huskies on their toes.

An explosive fourth inning helped Highland pull away when they scored nine runs to take a 12-2 lead.

Pekin added their third run of the evening in the bottom of the fourth but Highland added three more of their own in the sixth inning, burying the Panthers 15-3.

Pekin dropped to 1-14 after the conference loss to Highland and are ranked eighth of nine teams within the SE Iowa super conference – North.

Highland v. WACO doubleheader:

Highland hosted a doubleheader against WACO on Friday, June 14, winning with a combined score of 33-0.

Game one was a landslide victory for the Huskies, scoring 19 runs in the first two frames, concluding the game prematurely.

Game two featured a similar fate: Highland scored two in the first two innings. Then, they scored 12 in the bottom of the third, breaking free once again to close the game out.

The WACO Warriors remain winless after the two losses to Highland, falling to 0-10. WACO is ranked last within the SEISC – North.

West-Burlington Notre Dame 10, Highland 6:

Highland concluded a busy stretch with a road matchup against the West Burlington-Notre Dame Falcons on Monday, June 17. The Falcons completed a late-frame comeback when they beat the Huskies 10-6.

Highland jumped to a 6-0 lead after three frames, commanding a comfortable lead.

 The Falcons scored one run in the bottom of the third and added two more in the bottom of the fourth, cutting Highland’s lead in half.

In the bottom of the fifth, the floodgates opened as Burlington-Notre Dame scored four runs to take the 7-6 lead. They would add three more tallies in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final score.

With the win, the Burlington-Notre Dame Falcons rose to 14-5. 

Upcoming schedule:

The Highland Huskies (10-6) are ranked second within the SEISC – North after their busy stretch of six games.

On Tuesday, June 18, the Huskies faced off against the No. 1 ranked SEISC – North team, the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons. The Falcons are ranked No. 15 within the state, making them a tough foe – because the game took place directly after a print deadline, The News does not have the outcome of this game.

On Wednesday, June 19, the Huskies will host the Mediapolis Bulldogs for a 7 p.m. showdown.

Following, the Huskies will take on Wapello at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20 from the comfort of home.

On Saturday, June 22, the Huskies will compete in the Eddie Jones Memorial Invitational at Washington High School. The tournament begins at 9 a.m..

Highland’s packed schedule continues on Monday, June 24, when the Huskies take to the road to compete against New London. The game begins at 7 p.m..

Finally, the Huskies will travel to Columbus to face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25.
