Hawks triumph over top-ranked Regals

Coming off a dominating win against West Branch, 15-1, the Golden Hawks hosted another conference foe, the number one ranked team in class 2A, the Regina Regals

This would be the third time these two teams faced off against each other this season, with Regina defeating Mid-Prairie twice in a double header, but the outcome would be different this time. The Golden Hawks would hand Regina its fifth loss of the season, winning a close game, 3-2, on June 15.

With this win Mid-Prairie has now won three of its last five games and now possess a 10-8 record.

After a scoreless first inning Mid-Praire would explode onto the scoreboard with a solo homerun to take the lead. Junior Hannah Sellers was the Golden Hawk responsible for the homer, this was Sellers second home run of the season.

The Regals would respond in the top of the third with one run of their own to tie the game. They would then score another run in the fourth to take a single run lead. Answering back immediately, Mid-Prairie freshman Sophie Miller would score in the bottom of the fourth to knot up the game at 2-2.

Senior Molly Yoder would score what would be the game winning run for Mid-Prairie in the fifth. Yoder was on third base with the bases loaded and driving her in for the score with a sacrificial pop-fly was sophomore Sydney Knebel.

Holding onto a one run lead the Golden Hawks would only need to close out the seventh inning to take the win. Mid-Prairie would secure the win thanks to a nifty double play after sophomore Brenna Jehle caught a line drive and tossed the ball to first base to get the out after a Regina runner came off the base.

Knebel would pitch all seven innings for the Golden Hawks. She faced 25 batters and ended the game with five strikeouts, giving up five hits.

Doubleheader

West Liberty 4, Mid-Prairie 1; WL 15, MP 1

The Golden Hawks would stay home to welcome the West Liberty Comets for a doubleheader on June 19. In these games between two teams residing in the River Valley Conference South it was the Comets who emerged victorious, defeating Mid-Prairie in back-to-back games.

In the first game both teams played well enough on defense to keep the score 0-0 for the first three innings. It was in the top of the fourth where West Liberty was able to bring some runs scored to this game.

With two outs the Comets were able to get onto base after hitting a single. The next West Liberty batter would send the ball out of the park for a homerun, making the score 2-0. Keeping the Golden Hawks scoreless for another inning the Comets would double up their score in the sixth.

Mid-Prairie’s lone score came in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Madeline Schrader would get onto base after hitting a double and then she would get home after sophomore Dakota Mitchell hit a single. The game would end with Mid-Prairie losing, 4-1.

Pitching in all seven innings for the Golden Hawks was sophomore Sydney Knebel. Knebel would finish the game with six strikeouts.

The second game saw the Comets jump out to a 4-0 lead after two innings played. Mid-Prairie scored its only run of the game in the fifth to cut its deficit to three. The Golden Hawk run was scored by senior Molly Yoder who was able to get home after freshman Sophie Miller hit a single.

In the last two innings the Comets would pour on the points, scoring four runs in the sixth and aptly scoring seven runs in the seventh.

Three of those runs scored for the Comets in the sixth came after they hit another home run. With the Golden Hawks unable to score in the bottom of the seventh the game would end with Mid-Prairie being defeated, 15-1.

Freshman Kadence Grout served as the pitcher for the Golden Hawks in this second game against West Liberty.

Up next for Mid-Prairie (12-12) will be going on the road for its third game against West Liberty (14-6) on June 22. The Golden Hawks will then take part in the Linn-Mar/Alburnett Tourney in Marion from June 23-24. Then they will be on the road for a double header versus Durant (9-19) on June 26.
