On a night when Mid-Prairie celebrated its only senior softball player, Gabi Robertson, the Golden Hawks nearly stole a memorable win in their final home game of the season July 3.

Brenna Jehle’s run-scoring double in the third inning gave the Golden Hawks the only lead they grabbed all season in three games against 3A No. 11-ranked West Liberty. Jehle’s hit drove in two runs to break a 2-2 tie and she scored another run in the seventh inning.

But the Comets ruined the party, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to win their 20th game of the summer, 8-6.

Trailing by four runs in the final inning, the Golden Hawks scored twice on a West Liberty error and a ground-out. But the Comets held on for their third consecutive victory over the Golden Hawks.

West Liberty freshman Brynn Cassady had a game-high five hits and drove in two runs.

Jehle led the Golden Hawks with two hits. Jehle, Sophie Miller, Kadence Grout, Morgyn Bender, Olivia Swartzendruber and Braelee Yoder each scored runs.

Grout pitched the entire game for Mid-Prairie and had two strikeouts.
