Generations bid farewell to Hills Elementary School

HILLS

To celebrate Hills Elementary’s 59-year history, the school hosted a reunion on Thursday evening, May 23.

The school library was filled with old yearbooks and cards signifying which year they originated.  Classrooms hosted end-of-year slideshows.  The cafeteria was bustling, serving one last meal to those who went to Hills Elementary, have kids who attend, or were current/former staff members.

Hallways were filled with kids running up and down as their parents reminisced. Old friends caught up for the first time in a long time. Adults spoke to their elementary teachers for the first time since attending the school. People shed tears. Many laughed and smiled, taking it all in while they still could.

The evening was bittersweet, as Hills Elementary is set to close its doors after the final day of school, set for Wednesday, June 5. This comes after the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) chose to close the school to make necessary budgetary cuts.

Hill Elementary school opened in 1965.  It joined the ICCSD in 1970.
