KALONA
El Rincón is Kalona’s very own Mexican corner store, as ‘rincón’ is Spanish for ‘corner.’
The small store, located at 607 B. Ave., Kalona, is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Offering fresh fruit, meat, and all sorts of Mexican treats, ranging from authentic Mexican brands to flavorful drinks and even piñatas, El Rincón is sure to satisfy your needs.
Itzel Gonzalez opened El Rincón in November of 2023 while not giving the store much publicity. Naturally, more people in town began checking El Rincón out, and now business is running smoothly.
Gonzalez always hoped to open a shop in Kalona, she just never knew how it would take shape. When the space became available, her husband insisted she seize the moment. Eventually, Gonzalez decided her store should evoke Mexico, her home country.
She accomplished this feat.
For the local Hispanic population, El Rincón is a nice reminder of home and a local source of groceries, saving them a trek to Iowa City and beyond. For the rest of Kalona, El Rincón could be a new experience, enhancing their Taco Tuesdays of the future.
