Mid-Prairie reached the Class 3A volleyball regional finals for the second consecutive year with a sweep of PCM on Oct. 19.
The Hawks, after a slow start, took control and never left their foot off the gas, winning the regional semifinal 3-0 with set scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-16.
“It took a little bit for us to get in our flow and once we did that, look out, because we were unstoppable,” Golden Hawks head coach Sherry Evans said.
Sophomore Jovi Evans eclipsed over 1,000 assists and 500 kills for her career in the match.
“It was just so fun playing with everybody and I’m so happy that I can reach this [milestone] with all of my teammates because I couldn’t of done it without them,” Jovi Evans said. “It honestly feels really good. Like the coaches said, we have something really special brewing right now and I feel like we felt that in the atmosphere tonight.”
Junior Callie Huber continued her impressive run. She started both sets one and two with the opening kill.
Mid-Prairie’s heavy hitters continued to rain down shots all night and when PCM managed to create a competitive volley, junior Dakota Mitchell was there to quell the heavy return fire by leading the team again in digs. Helping Mitchell is junior Lanee Duwa who will fill in and also collect digs in important situations.
Sherry Evans believes the teams’ heavy chemistry and athleticism helps in their continual growth.
“We can switch things around with our front row and still be confident that someone's going to put it away,” she said. “We can have our setter in the back row and serve receive and our libero can put up a good second ball. That is such unconventional volleyball, and these girls are so athletic that it sticks with them and they do a good job.”
