The Kalona Board of Adjustment has denied a zoning variance for the Kalona Mennonite Church that would have permitted establishment of a licensed preschool and day care for up to 49 children.
The board heard opposition earlier this month from a dozen neighbors who said the day-care would increase traffic, noise and other problems in the heavily residential area.
The church, at 902 6th St., is in an R-1 area that does not permit such a facility. It is permitted in a R-2 or R-3 zone.
All of the opposition, however, stressed they did not oppose the idea, that such a facility is needed, but that the church was not a good place for it.
However, there are indications that a preschool facility will open by this fall in the former Country Livin’ building on Highway 1, south of Kalona, The facility is on a five-acre site and was sold at auction earlier this month.
