Through five innings on Friday, the Huskie bats were the epitome of consistency, pusing exactly two runs across the plate in every frame.
In the sixth, they were even better.
Highland scored five more to end the game an inning early, by a final of 15-5 over Louisa-Muscatine.
Junior third baseman Chase Schultz was 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Connor Grinstead gave Highland the lead for good with a one-out single in the second inning. Brenton Bonebrake scored the go-ahead run after a leadoff double.
“We worked good counts and had good at-bats all night,” Highland coach Seth Milledge said. “When we had a chance to put a ball in play, we took advantage. We were aggressive on the basepaths and put pressure on their defense.”
Kaige Vonnahme had two hits and reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases in the first inning. Bryce Thompson reached base on an error to score the game’s first run. Logan Bonebrake drew an RBI walk to add a run as well.
The sophomore Bonebrake also picked up his first varsity win on the mound. He pitched around seven walks to allow just three runs on two hits. He struck out seven over four innings.
“Logan Bonebrake pitched well after a shaky first inning,” Milledge said. “I'm proud of his efforts on such a frigid and wet night at the ballpark. He battled the elements and found a way to throw strikes and we were able to come out on top.”
Peyton Yeggy doubled and scored to put the Huskies ahead 5-2 in the third inning. Trevor McFarland drove in two runs with a single in the sixth inning and finished the game with three RBIs. He also pitched two innings of relief, allowing two unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
The Huskies (3-1) have won three in a row, while Lousia-Muscatine drops to 1-1.
