Last week, the City of Wellman dealt with two more water main hits, once again affecting Sixth and Seventh avenues.

The first water main hit occurred on Sixth Avenue on Wednesday, August. 19. The city first announced the issue on its Facebook page at 5 p.m. Residents along 6th Ave were without running water for a short period of time.

However, a few hours later, at approximately 8:25 p.m., the city announced that repairs had been completed and running water had been restored.

The following day, the city announced that another water main had been hit, this time on 7th Ave.

The water main hit occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday. It was eventually restored, and residents on 7th Ave once again had access to running water.

While announcing the water main hit, the city reminded residents “to let the faucets run a little while to remove any discoloration or bubbles that may happen from the pressure of the water when the valves are opened back up.”

Over the last month, Wellman has dealt with several water main issues. The first occurred on July 30, when 7th Ave North, 11th St and 8th Ave were closed while crews worked on the water main. During the work, a line connected to a fire hydrant was accidentally hit, causing a leak. The water was shut off for only a few hours before service was restored.

One week later, the city issued a boil order after crews encountered a leak involving several valves they were unable to locate. The boil order was lifted the following day, and the city went nearly two weeks without another water main issue.

That changed last week, when Wellman experienced water main hits on back-to-back days.

During a city council meeting early this month, the city reported that the water main project was approximately 75% complete. KE Flatwork is currently completing the project.
