Wellman
Updated Monday, August 3rd at 8:57 p.m.
With work continuing on Wellman's water main project, portions of 7th Avenue North, 11th Street and 8th Avenue were closed Thursday, July 30.
During construction, a leak caused some residents in the area to temporarily lose water service.
According to Wellman City Administrator Kelly Litwiller, "While they were boring, they pulled the pipe back through and caught an old service line connected to a fire hydrant that we didn't know was there. It wasn't an uncommon occurrence."
The city notified residents of the outage on Facebook around 4 p.m. Thursday, informing them of the situation.
The water main project has been underway throughout the summer. At the Wellman City Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 3, officials reported the project was about 75% complete. KE Flatwork is the contractor for the project.
Wellman was awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant in March 2025, and construction on the project began March 31, 2026.
While water service was interrupted, the city asked residents to remain patient as crews worked to restore service.
Water was restored a few hours later, though the city does not know exactly how many residents were affected.
