Swartzentruber concludes high school career with gutsy state run

Max Swartzentruber ran his final race as a Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk on Friday, finishing 34th at the state cross country meet in Fort Dodge.

Swartzentruber went out aggressively with a medal on his mind, knowing he’d need to take risks to bring home hardware. Unfortunately, he took one risk too many, slipping back eight places in the race’s final mile after surging near the top 25 through the first two.

“His goal coming into the day was that he wanted to get top 15 and get a medal,” head coach Jeremy Myers said. “He knew that to do that, he was going to have to be aggressive and take some risks. That’s a scary scary thing for a runner, when you’re running a 5k, to take risks in the middle of a race is terrifying. He ran an incredibly brave race.”

Swartzentruber was a two-time state qualifier.
