Nebergall sets season best at Mediapolis

Brock Nebergall might just be a fan of Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen,” as the Highland senior ran a season-best 17:38 to finish 8th and lead all area runners at Thursday’s Mediapolis Cross Country Invite, which was hosted at the Heritage Oaks Golf Course near Wapello.

Nebergall, a state qualifier for Lone Tree last fall, was the top finisher among 1A runners.

“It felt good,” Nebergall said of closing the regular season with his best time of the year. “I’ve been stuck around low 18s, high 17s, and it’s been tough because I know I can run faster than that. Not eating at those times has been frustrating, but today and, really, this entire week, I’ve felt great… It’s just a big boost in my ego.”

With the postseason now on the horizon, Nebergall says his eyes are set on an all-conference selection and returning to Fort Dodge.

“Last year I fell just short of [all-conference] and that was tough. That was a goal me and my coach at Lone Tree set last year, it was tough running the way I did and finishing that close, but not getting it. With this being my senior year, being all-conference is definitely one of my goals.”

As a team, the Highland boys finished 11th with 304 points. Kyler Fink, Issac Giesmann, Jackson Robinson and Brody Beinhart rounded out the Husky team on Thursday, finishing in 63rd, 71st, 80th and 83rd, respectively.

On the girls’ side, Highland’s Grace Bombei finished in 17th with a time of 23:02, the second 1A runner to cross the finish line.

“Grace Bombei is just the hardest working girl I’ve ever known,” Highland coach Angela Strobel said. “She puts her all into everything she does, and she gets all the success she deserves.”

Anna Piette also ran for Highland, finishing 67th with a time of 29:11.

Lone Tree also competed at the meet. Lydia Hartman was the lone girl to compete for the Lions, finishing 42nd with a time of 25:13. For the Lone Tree boys, Max Poock led the way in 92nd with a time of 23:25, while Carter Parrish and Trenton McKean followed close behind in 94th and 103rd.
