The city's main focus recently has been the proposed new fire station and city offices. During its previous meeting in July, the council agreed on proposed language for a $5.1 million bond for the project.

While discussing the proposed project, City Administrator Adriane Sedlacek presented two possible dates for open houses: Sept. 30 and Oct. 14, both at 6:30 p.m. The dates have not been finalized, as Sedlacek said she still needs to review them and determine what will work best.

Proposed bond

The city's goal is to have the bond issue on the ballot in November. If approved, the city would like to use LOST (Local Option Sales Tax) revenue to help offset the cost to residents. The city initially discussed using $200,000 in LOST funds toward the project.

Later in the discussion, council members asked to see what the tax impact would look like if the city instead used between $100,000 and $175,000 in LOST funds rather than $200,000.

After hearing from the council, Sedlacek said she would contact Speer Financial to get updated numbers for the different funding amounts and review them with the council.

Muller appointed to council

Following the departure of former council member Jackson Willette, who moved to Lone Tree, the city needed to fill the vacant seat. During the previous council meeting, Sedlacek and Mayor Tim Kemp discussed interviews conducted with four applicants.

According to Sedlacek and Kemp, the interviews went well, but Patrick Muller stood out among the applicants. The council ultimately decided to appoint Muller to fill the vacant seat.

Muller was sworn in on Monday, Aug. 10, as the newest council member. He will serve the remainder of the term through December 2027.

Other business

During public comment, a resident raised concerns about sidewalks along Main Street becoming covered by grass.

The council also reviewed the LOSAP (Length of Service Award Program) contributions for firefighters and unanimously approved the resolution.

Council member Sue Henderson informed the council that the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center plans to conduct a spay-and-neuter effort in September before releasing the animals back into the community. Henderson said the program would be handled without additional responsibility for the city.

Next meeting

The next city council meeting will take place Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at the fire station.
