SIGOURNEY
A school record night began early for Mid-Prairie and senior quarterback Brooks Weber in a Sept. 11 game at Sigourney Keota.
Weber, who was already the school’s record holder in career touchdown passes, connected with Carson Humphrey for a 17-yard scoring pass just 4:09 into a game that soon turned into a rock ‘em and sock ‘em offensive battle.
Later in that opening quarter, Weber launched a 69-yard scoring pass to Kenrick Kos.
Then, running back Ryan Henry came out of the backfield and turned a pass catch into a 73-yard scoring play.
Get the picture?
By the time the Golden Hawks wound down the clock on a tight 49-41 victory, Weber had thrown for a school-record 398 yards to become the No. 1 passer in Iowa 2A, Kendrick Kos had caught two of Weber’s five TD passes, and Henry had scored a career-high three touchdowns and would have had a fourth except he purposely fell to the ground in the game’s final minute to keep the clock going.
“He did that on his own,” head coach Daren Lambert said, proudly smiling.
Henry, a two-time state finalist in the 100-yard dash, ran for 97 yards and two TDs on nine carries, and totaled another 96 yards in receiving yards on three catches.
“I’m just trusting my teammates,” he said.
Weber’s night was just stunning. He not only passed for 398 yards, but he completed 17-of-23 passes for an efficiency rating of 291. All night long, he burned Sigourney Keota’s defense by throwing long to a group of wide receivers and running back Henry who were all state track meet relay or individual runners last spring at Drake University.
Kos, a state qualifier in the individual 200-meter run and part of the Golden Hawks’ 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams at state, simply ran past his defender for his 69-yard scoring catch.
Six of Mid-Prairie’s seven touchdowns were scored by runners on the school’s state-qualifying track team; the seventh was scored by Kale Miller on a crossing pattern for a 27-yard score in the fourth quarter.
“The focus,” Lambert said, “was to spread it out.”
And that was exactly the opposite of what Sigourney Keota, a 27-7 loser the previous week to 2025 2A state semifinalist Wilton, actually desired.
“They wanted to play it in a phone booth,” Lambert said. “They’re very good at it.”
And the Cobras did give the Golden Hawks fits with that strategy. Utilizing a tight offensive backfield that depends on misdirection, Sigourney Keota piled up 332 rushing yards with quarterback Chase Clarahan and four other backs. A 1-yard scoring run and then a scoring pass by Clarahan in the third quarter turned a 15-point deficit into a 28-28 tie in the third quarter. Blake Baker scored four touchdowns and ran for 137 yards.
Miller’s TD catch with 9:56 left in the game put the Golden Hawks back in front, and then Henry finished off the Cobras with 13- and 70-yard TD runs as a large crowd howled in delight, and in frustration.
The game became so emotional and hot that Mid-Prairie’s student section drew a warning from game officials in the final quarter due to bad language.
A three-yard scoring run by Sigourney’s Blake Baker with 2:28 left trimmed the Golden Hawks’ lead to 49-35. Then, the Cobras recovered an onsides kick and scored on another 3-yard TD run by Baker with 35 seconds left.
Mid-Prairie covered Sigourney’s second onsides attempt, and when Henry found himself with an open field on the Golden Hawks’ first offensive play, he started to run and then slipped to the ground as the clock kept going.
It was a finishing play to a career night.
