Mid-Prairie girls place 2nd in Monticello meet

Mid-Prairie seniors Kendal Landstrum and Brooklyn Stutzman finished in the top 10 for the second consecutive time this season, and the Golden Hawks captured a second-place girls team finish Sept. 12 at a cross country meet hosted by Monticello.

The Golden Hawks were the only team to have four finishers among the top 13 team competitors in the girls varsity race, and four among the top 17 overall.

Landstrum placed fourth with a time of 19:26.7, three spots ahead of Stutzman (19:37.9).

Tessa Brokaw, a junior, finished 12th with a time of 20:09.3 and Rachel Hostetler, a junior, was 17th with a time of 20:45.5.

All Mid-Prairie runners had faster times than their season opener in Mount Vernon, when the Golden Hawks scored a girls team title.

Max Swartzentruber, a Mid-Prairie senior, posted a sixth-place finish in the boys race with a season-best time of 17:04.2.

Epworth, of western Dubuque, won the girls team title with a score of 60, beating out the Golden Hawks by just four points. Mary Grace Lyons of Monticello won the girls race with a time of 18:46.2.

Ruby Miller, a senior running in just her second varsity event, finished 39th with a time of 22:04.9.

Jacob Lothamer, a freshman, scored a 34th-place finish in the boys race with a time of 18:20.8, and was followed by Thomas Lueck in 70th place, Cayce Damschen in 72nd place, Landon Hough in 80th place and Jonathon Pickard in 83rd place.

The Mid-Prairie boys combined for an 11th-place finish in a race that was also won by Epworth. Jesse Gomez of Denver won the boys race with a time of 16:20.5.

Kyrie Poll, a Mid-Prairie senior coming back from an injury, finished eighth in the girls JV race with a time of 23:18.5.

The Golden Hawks will compete next Tuesday at the Mount Pleasant Invitational.
