Mid-Prairie to Tipton, Highland/Lone Tree/Hillcrest to Sigourney for track state qualifiers

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union released assignments for this year’s joint state qualifying and district championship meets to be held May 14.

Mid-Prairie will go to Tipton for a Class 2A qualifier, while Highland, Hillcrest and the Lone Tree girls will head to Sigourney for a 1A qualifier. Three Lone Tree boys will compete for Columbus in the 2A meet at Tipton.

In 2A, the top two finishers in each event will qualify for the May 21-23 state meet at Drake University; another eight will earn at-large spots in each event.

In 1A, only the meet champion in each event will automatically qualify for state; another 14 at-large bids will be selected across the state. An athlete must finish among the top eight in their qualifying meet to be eligible for an at-large spot.

Seven of Mid-Prairie’s 11 opponents are repeats from last year’s qualifiers, with Central Lee, Columbus, West Branch and West Burlington/Notre Dame representing new competition for the Golden Hawks.

Eleven of the 14 schools headed to Sigourney were at the WACO qualifier last year, with North Mahaska, Twin Cedars and Van Buren County joining the field.
