Scott Powers, 52, of Lone Tree, who was arrested back in July in connection with the death of his 76-year-old father, Richard Powers, is now scheduled to stand trial on Tuesday, July 27, 2027.

Powers was originally scheduled to stand trial on January 19, 2027. However, the trial was postponed on October 8, with a new date set three weeks later.

The case dates back to July 13, when authorities found Richard Powers dead inside a bedroom at 217 W. Elm St. in Lone Tree, prompting an investigation.

According to reports, authorities later received information from an individual who had heard that Scott Powers wanted to kill his father. Powers was later located in Cedar Rapids, where he was arrested.

When authorities located Powers, they reportedly noticed blood on his hands and asked whether he had been involved in a motorcycle accident. Powers allegedly responded, “No, I killed my father.”

Powers was transported to University of Iowa Health Care for treatment before being taken to the Johnson County Jail. Meanwhile, Richard Powers' body was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Powers pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in August.

The case remains under investigation. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of Richard Powers' death, though investigators previously indicated that they did not believe a firearm was involved.
