The trial of Scott Powers, a Lone Tree man charged with killing his 76-year-old father, Richard Powers, has been postponed until July 2027. His trial was originally scheduled for Jan. 19, 2027.

Powers was arrested in July in connection with his father’s death. He pleaded not guilty at his Aug. 7 arraignment. Judge Lars Anderson is overseeing the case.

Authorities found Richard Powers dead in his bedroom at 217 W. Elm St. in Lone Tree on the night of July 13 and launched an investigation.

According to authorities, a source told investigators that Scott Powers had expressed a desire to kill his father. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office began searching for him after receiving that information.

Scott Powers was later located in Cedar Rapids, arrested and transported to the Johnson County Jail.

Authorities also reported that individuals who noticed blood on his hands asked whether he had been in a motorcycle accident. He reportedly replied, “No. I killed my Dad.”

Authorities have not determined the cause or manner of Richard Powers’ death but have indicated they do not believe a firearm was involved.

The case remains under investigation.
