Course Offerings
Principal Jacque gave an overview of high school course offerings alongside Policy 603.01 (Basic Instruction Program) and Policy 505.05 (Graduation Requirements). The board’s discussion focused on potentially modifying the current 48-credit graduation requirement by adjusting either total credits or category units. The Board also evaluated existing courses, considered changing life skills standards, and discussed a potential implementation timeline for these updates.
First Impressions
The board discussed community complaints regarding district facilities and shared initial feedback. To assess recent updates and plan for next year, the board requested a facilities tour of projects completed over the summer. Additionally, Superintendent Hotz shared that Maintenance Director Scott Feldman plans to hire upcoming summer help to replace a former staff member. The board recommended finding alternative solutions for routine grounds maintenance so Feldman can focus on higher-priority needs throughout the district.
Cooperative Agreements
Soccer: The board discussed continuing the soccer cooperative agreement with West Liberty for both boys and girls. Athletic Director Jacque recommended continuing the partnership, with formal approval set for the next regular meeting.
Wrestling: The Board discussed a potential wrestling program cooperative agreement with Highland for the 2026-2027 season. A joint coaches’ meeting was scheduled for October 8th at 5:00 p.m. to begin reviewing the proposal. Coaches and students have met to discuss the potential sharing of the program, and have submitted their feedback to Athletic Director Jacque via email.
Football: Superintendent Hotz and Athletic Director Jacque updated the board on the football sharing agreement with Highland. Initial talks have begun regarding how the current season is going. Next, each district will evaluate the season before holding a joint board meeting to discuss the continuation of the cooperative agreement.
Communication
The board discussed communication regarding Board Policy 211: Open Meetings. Members received information from the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) resources, including the Open Meetings Law Overview, Open Meetings FAQ, and Unclogging the Information Pipeline. The discussion focused on clear communication and transparency.
