Highland girls’ golf bounces back in home opener

The Highland girls’ golf team won its triangular against Danville and WACO by nearly 80 strokes on Thursday, as the Huskies shot 214 to Danville’s 292 while WACO didn’t register a team score at Riverside’s Blue Top Ridge.

Senior Highland duo Emersyn Schultz and Adisyn Prottsman also claimed the top two spots individually, shooting 8 and 12 over par, respectively, in their first home meet of the year.

“Getting on the course for the first time this year just felt really good, especially on a very nice day, we’ve been playing windy and not very good conditions,” Schultz said.

Earlier that week, the Highland girls had travelled to Danville, where Schultz and Prottsman shot below their own high standards, shooting 18 and 21 over par as Highland finished third to Burlington Notre Dame and Fort Madison, each of which the Huskies beat at the Nikes Invitational to open the year.

“It did feel really good,” Schultz said of Thursday’s bounceback. “I feel like seeing the improvements just helped me to get my confidence back.”

The team behind Schultz and Prottsman has started to take shape as well, with sophomore Joslyn Prottsman establishing herself in the third spot, finishing just outside the top ten at Danville and fourth on Thursday, while sophomore Autumn Guseman rounded out the scoring in the team’s fourth slot at each meet.

The Huskies will travel to Wapello for a meet on Wednesday before returning to Blue Top for a triangular with Winfield-Mt. Union and fellow host Lone Tree.

Highland boys take third

The Husky boys finished third in Thursday’s triangular, falling to the Bears and the Warriors with a final score of 182-187-196 while remaining winless on the year.

Freshman Kyler Fink had a breakout performance in his home debut, claiming an individual first place at seven strokes over par, with the next-best Husky finishing in ninth in junior Presten Smith.

The Huskies will continue their search for a win on Thursday when they join Lone Tree in hosting 7th-ranked Winfield-Mt. Union
