Kalona

Moldova is a country located in Eastern Europe. It sits near the Ukraine border and has a population of about 2.38 million people.

Alexandra Sasha Timco is a student at Hillcrest Academy and comes from Moldova. She is from Soroca, Moldova, and is currently a junior in high school.

On Tuesday, November 11, she visited the Rotary Club in Kalona for Veterans Day. She is staying with Shawn and Tonia Poole in Wellman during her time here.

During the meeting, Timco shared more about her home country and brought along Moldova’s national flag. Moldova is a landlocked nation. The countries that border Moldova include Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, south, and east.

Moldova is a democratic republic, and its capital city is Chișinău, which is also the country’s largest city. The national religion is Orthodox Christianity, with around 90% of the population identifying with that faith.

The country’s official language is Romanian. People there also speak Russian, Gagauz—which is a Turkic language—and English. According to recent data, English is becoming more widely spoken among younger generations.

Moldova’s president is Maia Sandu, who has served in office since 2020. The country features many unique tourist attractions, including the world’s largest wine cellar, some of the smallest public statues in existence like the four-inch Little Prince Statue, and a high number of underground cave monasteries carved into limestone.
