William Joseph Wilmot was born Aug. 13, 1938, in Listowel Kerry, Ireland, the son of Dan and Julia (Griffin) Wilmot. He graduated from St. Johns High School in Ireland and did his Ophthalmic apprenticeship in London. He was a licensed optician and contact lens fitter, he spent many years working in the ophthalmology department in Iowa City and Coralville Walmart’s, retiring in 2012.
On Oct. 29, 1983, William was united in marriage to Patricia Ruegsegger Hutchinson in Palm Springs, California.
He grew up in Ireland and England before coming to the United States in June 1963 where he lived in California until moving to rural Wellman in 1994.
He was the past president of the California Society of Ophthalmic Dispensers Palms Spring Chapter from 1974-1975 and a member of the board of directors. He was a member of the Advisory Board, Ophthalmic Program, at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, California from 1976-1977.
He enjoyed being a jokester and the family dog Pooka. William died on Monday Aug. 23, 2021, at his residence at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife: Patricia of Wellman; a son: Danny (Jacelyn) Wilmot of Golden, Colorado; two daughters: Julie (Steve) Buccino of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and Sheila (Matt) Webb of Apple Valley, California; two stepsons: Michael (Regina) Hutchinson of Rancho Mirage, California and Terry (Star) Hutchinson of Cathedral City, California; numerous grandchildren; two sisters: Amelia Wilmot of Fair Oaks, California and Patsy Wilmot of Alhambra, California; a brother: Anthony Wilmot of England; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents; two brothers; a sister: Marie Rennels; and a stepson: Stephen Hutchinson.
There will be no services at this time. Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg is caring for William and his family.
